Build the base from a few compatible pieces
Start with two or three pairs of trousers, four or five tops and two warmer layers. Colours should cross-match: navy, grey or black bottoms work with a wide range of lighter and brighter shirts.
One neat long-sleeved shirt covers an assembly, class photograph, theatre trip and family event. If the school does not require a formal shirt every day, wait to understand the real wearing pattern before buying several similar styles.
- 4–5 everyday shirts, polos or other comfortable tops.

How a boy's school shirt should fit
The shoulder seam should end at the edge of the shoulder rather than dropping down the arm. One finger should fit comfortably inside the buttoned collar and the sleeve should reach the wrist bone. Ask the child to reach forwards and overhead — the back must not pull tight.
Judge growing room mainly through sleeve and body length. A very wide collar or heavily dropped shoulder will not necessarily improve with growth. Between sizes, choose the roomier option only when the shoulder and collar still stay in place.

- The cuff does not cover the whole hand and the child can open it.
- The child can sit, bend and put on a school bag comfortably.

Choose trousers that allow a full day of movement
A school-trouser waistband must not press when the child is seated. For a younger pupil, adjustable elastic or a soft partly elastic waist is often easier than a complicated belt. The leg should fall neatly over the shoe without touching the ground.
Check the knees and seams because they take a lot of wear. A little stretch can help, but the cut matters most: the child should climb stairs, squat and play outside without pulling or tripping.

Make weekdays easier with ready outfit combinations
On Sunday, prepare five top-and-bottom pairings or photograph them. The child can choose one each evening without emptying the wardrobe. This supports independence and reduces morning decisions.
Treat marks quickly and always follow the care label. A smart shirt does not automatically need a hot wash after a short, clean wear, but air it after school and check the collar and cuffs.
